What I Learned Throughout This Semester in Digital Productions

Duck, december2024

The end of the term has given me a chance to think back on my time in the CNMS1200: Digital Productions class. I thought I would just learn how to use editing tools and maybe learn a little Photoshop and animation. That’s not what this course was about, though. This course challenged me to enhance my artistic abilities, honed my critical thinking skills, and enabled me to produce digital art from beginning to end.

1. Storytelling is everything
The way the story was told was just as important—if not more important—than the pictures. This was true for short films, animations, and ads. I learned how to use storyboards, video editing, and transitions to make my ideas come to life.

2. Skills in technology that last
The class taught me how to use a lot of different digital tools, such as Adobe Illustration, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, InDesign, and lighting kits. At first, it was too much for me, but after some practice, I felt comfortable editing, colour grading, adding transitions, and matching music. I know I’ll use these skills after this class is over. I think these skills are extremely important, especially in my field.

3. Getting feedback is important for growth
Giving and getting critique was a big part of how I learned. I learned not to take criticism personally and instead use it to get better. I would recommend more team projects in this course to improve our understanding of the different tools and see projects in new creative ways.

5. It takes courage to be creative
Finally, I learned that it can be scary to share your thoughts, but it’s worth it. I was pushed by this class to be more artistic, try new things, and get out of my comfort zone. I really wish this course was longer, in order to properly understand the creative world of Adobe.

Last Thoughts
One of the best things about my semester so far has been this Digital Productions class. I not only got better at using technology and being creative, but I also became more sure of my ability to use digital media to tell stories. I can’t wait to use what I’ve learned in future projects and maybe even start a job in making short movies, animations, or graphic design!
